The Definition of an Air Ambulance and what AAN can do for you.
What are air ambulances, referred to as Medical Flights, Aeromed flights, Aeromedical, Lifeguards, Care flight, Critical Care Medflights, advanced air ambulances, medevacs or jet rescue /Air ICU (intensive care unit). Many people call this life saving service by different names but all services offer most of the same levels of care including ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), Critical Care and BLS (Basic Life Support). Most fixed wing air ambulances are utilized for long distance transports and are capable of worldwide air ambulance services with a crew including the highest rated pilots and a critical care flight crew consisting of a Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) and a critical care paramedic or respiratory therapist. In some medical flights a doctor or physician is required due to the patients, condition. Helicopter (rotor wing) Emergency medevacs are used for local medical emergencies. The International call sign for medical flights is (HOSP) or hospital flight and in the United States we use the term “Lifeguard”. These are aviation terms used in referring to a medevac mission that is critical care and requesting priority.
